Sarah Ellen operated a grist mill in Pigeon Roost, NC until a flood washed it away. She also was a bee-keeper and was quite known for her honey. Her son, John Henry had in his possession an old wooden hive that belonged to her. There are many references to her in the writings of Harvey Miller of the 'Pigeon Roost News'. Harvey was the nephew of Nora Barnett Arrowood, John Henry's wife.

Sarah is buried right next to Isabell Correll Arrowood, wife of her son, Welzia in the Mt. Olivet Church Cemetery.

Sarah Ellen married Samuel Augustus Arrowood. After his death, she married David Miller. He was known as "Cripple Dave" Miller from injuries that he sustained in the war. Five children were born of this union.

Grave remained unmarked for many years.
Marker was placed by great-grandson, Steve Lewis Arrowood.

Martha Arrowood Miller, a descendent from Wezlia (Wesley) Arrowood, said her family knew of an unmarked grave in the Olivet cemetery. They only knew a female Arrowood family member was buried there. Now they believe the unmarked grave belongs to Ellender. They are thinking of putting up a stone for her.

The great May flood of 1900. F.M. Miller of Pigeon Roost, Mitchell County, NC reports that he was only about a month old when the great May flood of 1900 occurred, and he recalls of his parents telling him that they had to flee to higher ground when their log cabin in the valley was being surrounded by water. Another old timer reported that when Aunt Ellen Miller's building that housed her old corn mill that was pulled by the water wheel went floating the creek, the people who were watching the rising stream from the hillside saw a white cat, that acted unconcerned, sitting on the roof of the building which rode on down the creek and the house stayed together for sure until it drifted out into the river. -Excerpt taken from the writings of Harvey J.
