About Sarah Gilbert

Despite his successful defense of the charges of treason, Gilbert continued to have legal problems after the war, being engaged in numerous lawsuits, and eventually lost his property. In 1786, 1787, and a portion of 1788, he lived in Charleston, South Carolina. He later returned to Gilbert Town to live at the home of his son-in-law, James Holland, where he died in 1790. He was buried on Ferguson's Hill above Gilbert Town.

Gilbert's wife, Sarah McCanless Gilbert, lived until 1822. She went with the James Holland family in 1790 to Maury County, Tennessee, and is buried at Holland's Ford on the Duck River.

James Holland married Gilbert's daughter Sarah. He represented Rutherford County in the North Carolina House of Commons and the Senate. He was elected to the first board of trustees of the University of North Carolina.

Note: William and Sarah Gilbert have four deed transactions recorded in Rutherford County Deed Index. Two are to Richard Ledbetter in 1780 and two are to William Watson in 1784.

From The American Historical Magazine, quarterly published by the Peabody Normal College, Nashville, TN, page 259-267, "Two Carolina Pioneers" by Flournoy Rivers.: Sarah survived her husband till Dec. 22, 1822, having been born in 1737. She is buried where her son-in-law James settled, at "Hollands's Ford," "Holland's Ferry," on Duck River above Columbia, in the Fourth District of Maury County. Her family was from southeast Pennsylvania.

86 yrs. "Mother in law of Major James Holland."

(1) Change birth from unknown to 1736. 1822 minus 86 is 1736. (2) Maiden name: McCandless. (3) Married Col William Gilbert in 1756 in South Carolina. (4) I couldn't find Col in FAG, but he was born in 1730 in Scotland or Ireland, and died in Rutherford County, NC. You may want to include this in the bio or add the Col to FAG; I don't know where he is buried. (5) Please order photo for Sarah (and Sarah is correctly spelled Sarah, with an "h"). (6) I will link her later with her daughter, Sarah Gilbert Holland.
