About Sarah Emmeline Scrogin

GEDCOM Note

From Find a Grave:Sarah's father was Peris Holmes and her mother was Lois (Sweet) Holmes. Sarah's marriage is recorded in Illinois records. She was joined in marriage with Levin Polk Scrogins on Dec. 25, 1848. On 1850 Census, they have a daughter, 10 months old on that Census. This daughter is Ella E. Scrogin, died an infant, but I don't have death date for her.

NEWSPAPER ARTICLE: The Lexington Courier, 1869. In 1850, Levin Polk Scrogin, Sr. gave three quarters of an acre of ground on the hill near his residence for a burial ground; and one of his own children, a little daughter, was the first buried there.

The Child of S.S. Scrogin was the second. Quite a number of little children were buried there before any grown person. An epidemic raged in the country among children in the fall of 1850, and the idol of many a fond mother's heart was taken from her, and all that was mortal of these little sleepers was housed up in this home of the dead.

One by one has been added to the number since then until scores of old and young now sleep in that place. Here too, the soldiers sleep, all covered with honors of war. We honor the graves of our friends and should spare no pains to have them secured against molestation.

The condition of a graveyard, generally speaking, is a very good index of the character of the community in which it is located.

NOTE: By 1904 another newspaper article was published asking the public to please donate to maintain Scrogin Cemetery. Scrogin Cemetery finally went into deterioration & Vandalism. It took until 1980 to finally restore Scrogin Cemetery as best as could be salvaged through the efforts of Verda Gerwick, of the Lexington Genealogical Society.
