About Sarah Houlton

Sarah Ingersoll was baptized on July 1,1727 at Sutton Parrish, Bedfordshire, England. Her parents were Richard Ingersoll and Ann Langley. She emigrated to America in 1629 with her Puritan family on one of the six ships of the Higginson Fleet. The Ingersoll family settled in Salem Town, Massachusetts Bay Colony. Sarah Ingersoll married William Haines circa 1644. They were the parents of three children: Jonathan Haines, Sarah Haines, and Thomas Haines. William Haines died sometime prior to November 1651. Sarah Ingersoll Haines, widow of William Haines, married Joseph Houlton, who, at an earlier time had been a servant in her father’s household, on November 13,1651 at Newberry, Massachusetts. They were seen later living in Salem Village on the Weston Grant property originally purchased by her father and William Haines. Their first child, Joseph Houlton Jr., was baptized on May 15, 1653, at the First Church of Salem. Sarah Ingersoll Haines Houlton was seen in church records as “Old Mrs. Houlton." Church records show that she died in 1703 in Salem, Colony of Massachusetts. The will of her second husband, Joseph Houlton, was written on May 28, 1703, and probated on June 27, 1705. His wife, Sarah Ingersoll Haines Houlton, was not listed in his will. Prepared by James F. Haynes.
