Marriage 1 Daniel Hays BARNES
Married: 17 MAY 1842 in, Randolph Co, Mo
Divorced: Y
The following was submitted by Stella Glover Blair, Grand Daughter:
Sarah Jane Standley (Barnes) came from a large family. Not much of her early life is known today, only that she was married to Samuel Kent Feb. 2, 1828. They joined the Mormon Church and suffered the many hard ships under these trying conditions, for the were driven from their home many times.
When her oldest child (Sidney Benajah) was 12 years old her husband died in Huntsville, soon after this she and her family moved to Nauvoo, IL with a body of the Church, and lived there for six years. Sidney had the responsibility of earning the living for the family. His wages amounted to $7.00 per month. Sarah Jane tried to help make Sidney’s burden lighter by going out and doing a little house work. She worked in the home of the Prophet Joseph Smith and Brigham Young. She loved and had great respect form both of these families. She lived just a short distance from them. She and her family saw the lifeless bodies of the prophet and his brother Hyrum as they were being carried by relatives and friends down the street after they were murdered.
Sarah Jane remarried Daniel Barnes and two daughters were had by them, Mary Ann Barnes (Loveland) on Dec. 22, 1843 at Tippecanoe MO and Sarah Jane Barnes (Glover) born Aug. 1, 1845 at Nauvoo, IL.
This marriage proved to be very disappointing. He drank liquor excessively and finely deserted her. Some time after she thought she recognized him as one of the members of a mob. In 1846 she and here family moved from Nauvoo to Winter Quarters. There home here consisted of an old blacksmith shop with out doors, window or a floor. Their bread was made by grinding corn in a hand mill. At this place we find Sidney had great courage and was doing all he could to help better their conditions. He had met a lovely girl (Mary Matilda Daley) and they were planning to be married and move to the valley of the Mountains. With some of the saints who are making plans to leave soon. She knew Sidney’s greatest desire was to come west, since he had heard the Prophet talk, and say, that the saints would come west and become a mighty people. It was quite a trial for Sidney to leave her mother in such poor conditions, but she wasn't a complaining woman.
She later married a man by the name of Peter Dopp on July 2, 1850 by this marriage she had a son who's name was William Henry Dopp. When this child was 2 years old, Sidney returned to MO to bring his mother to the Rocky Mountains. He was very much surprised to find she had remarried. It was late fall and Brigham Young had ask those who were returning to MO to stay and help the saints get better prepared for the journey. So Sidney stayed and helped repair the wagons, collect food etc. until May of 1855. This was a tiresome journey for all, but in July they arrived in Salt Lake City. Sidney moved his wife out of her home and his mother in. Sarah Jane and her husband lived in Bountiful, Davis County, Utah for a number of years, and then they moved to Lewiston, Utah where they lived in a 2 Room house across from their daughter Sarah Jane Glover. They helped Pioneer what we are now enjoying, one of the most prosperous and beautiful spots in Utah. She had the misfortune of loosing this husband, and her sons Henry and Sidney moved her close to them, into a two room log house across the street from her Grandson, Melvin E Kent.
In her later years when her health began to fail her daughter Sarah Jane took her to live with her, so she could care for her. She lived to the age of 92 , had a strong testimony of the Mormon Gospel, and bore this testimony when she would relate her experiences in crossing the plains Some of her interesting stories are such as scraping the grease from their shoes to grease the hub caps of the wagon, and at Independence rock where the Platt rivers join, there would be a white formation of powder form on the beach, she would scrape some of this white solution and boil it to purify it, then let it settle , and found it to be almost like soda, so she used it to make bread and found it answered the purpose of soda. Also it was used form a mouth wash, and was used to help cure the black cancer so many had at that time.
Many interesting stories could be told by those who know her in Lewiston. She had a wonderful Patriarchal Blessing given by Joseph Smith senior Patriarch of the Mormon Church. So we leave her memory with you, as she passed away Oct. 21, 1901 at the home of her daughter Sarah Jane, and was buried in the Lewiston Cemetery.
