About Sarah Jane Littlefield Dustin
Sarah Jane Littlefield was the daughter of Waldo and second wife Mercy Higgins Littlefield. She married Joseph Dustin in Quincy, Hancock, Illinois, on November 6, 1845, when they were 18 and 15 years old respectively. They were married by Sarah's brother, Lymon O. Littlefield, in the Church of Latter Day Saints. Sarah and Joseph came to Utah in the Isaac Stewart Company in 1852, along with three of their children, Hiram Joseph, 5, Lavina Jane, 3, and Aseneath Cecelia, 2. They had three more children, Izora, Elizabeth, and a child who was born and died before 1866.
They divorced in San Bernardino, California, September 18, 1866. Sarah resumed using her maiden name, and was buried in the Pioneer Cemetery in San Bernardino, California, under the name of Littlefield. Joseph married Mary C. Bickmore in 1878, and they had twelve children.
In the 1880 U.S. Federal Census for San Bernardino, California, Sarah, 48, was living with her married daughter, Izora E. More, 20, and her husband, John Henry, 24, and their one year old son, John W. More. In the 1900 census dated June 9th, Sarah was listed as a 70-year old widower, and living with her were 3 of her grandchildren, John, Hiram and Mabel More, 21, 18, and 15 years old. Also living with them was a 38-year old "roomer" named Andrew Gruen. Sarah's occupation was shown as running a rooming house. Her grandson John was working as a laborer for a packing house, Hiram was also working as a laborer and Mabel was still in school.
For some reason, in 1900, Sarah's son-in-law, John Henry More was living in Vanderbilt, San Bernardino County, California, and was working as a miner. He was listed as being married, and that he had married in 1890, however, Izora was not living with him at the time. Since their son John was born in 1880, they were obviously married before 1890. According to California Select Marriage Records, John R. More and Isora Eblin Dustin were, in fact, married January 11, 1876, in San Bernardino County, California.
However, in 1900, John and Izora may have been separated or divorced, because she was listed in a census record that year dated June 4th, living in Colton, San Bernardino County, California, with her three children, as follows: Ebbie More, 40, John W., 20, Hiram, 17, and Sarah Mabel, 14. This census record showed that Izora had been widowed, that she had been married for 16 years, had given birth to 5 children, but only 3 were still living. Both of her sons were working as laborers, and her daughter was still in school. If Izora had been married for 16 years, then she and John Henry More must have separated or divorced about 1892, since they were married in 1876. Why there are 2 census records in 1900, one showing Izora's 3 children living with her in Colton, and another showing they were living with Izora's mother in San Bernardino, is strange especially since the one with her mother was dated June 9th and the one with Izora and her children was dated June 4th, only 5 days apart.
Sarah died September 21, 1917, in San Bernardino, California, at the age of 87. Her daughter Izora died in 1948 at the age of 88 years old. Both Izora and her husband and their three children and her mother were all buried in the Pioneer Memorial Cemetery. Izora's son John Wilfred More, died in 1944, son Hiram in 1972 and daughter Mabel Sarah in 1973.
