Hello Jay Researchers!

I know there has been a lot of research done trying to prove or disprove that Sarah, wife of Nathan Wright, was Sarah Jay. I was recently provided a copy of a letter written November 7, 1841 by Right Wright, son of Nathan and Sarah Wright. The original of this letter is in the possession of Ronald Toops, a descendant.

I was specifically drawn to Right's mention of "Uncle John Jay and Aunt Lucy" and "Uncle James and Jemima Jay." After contemplating this for quite awhile, I can't seem to come up with any way that both John and Lucy Jay and James and Jemima Jay could be Right's aunts and uncles unless his mother was Sarah Jay, daughter of William Jay, Jr. and Elizabeth ____________ (some say Layton). James Jay, son of William and Elizabeth ____ Jay, Jr. married Jemima Mills - this is my line. John Jay, son of William Jay Jr. and his second wife, Margaret Voss, married Lucy Toles.

There are other names mentioned in the letter and those of you have done research on these early Jay lines will recognize some or all of them. I might mention that Right Wright was married to Malinda Hilborn, and Mills Jay (son of James and Jemima Mills Jay) was married to Malinda's sister Matilda Hilborn.

Ron Toops has very graciously allowed me to post this letter on my website for all to view. The letter consists of 4 pages, plus an address page. I've also included on my website Ron's typewritten interpretion of the letter for a little easier reading. I apologize that the photos of the letter don't appear in order - I couldn't figure out how to do that but they are numbered, page 1, etc. and are listed under the "Photos" section.

Although definitely not a primary source, I feel this is an important document in that it appears to substantiate Sarah, wife of Nathan Wright, as a daughter of William Jay, Jr. and Elizabeth. I would encourage you to please review this letter and let me know your thoughts.
