About Sarah Leonard

Not the same as Sarah Simmons

Very strange that Mayflower Society reportedly has not shown the correct Mary Simmons (daughter in law to JOHN ALDEN/husband to his son Joseph Alden), as the daughter of Sarah Chilton ( of Isabel Chandler lines) Leonard/ Simmons all these years in their genealogy books.

From The Mayflower Families Through Five Generations, Vol 15, p8:

SARAH CHANDLER3 (Isabella2 Chilton, James1) m Duxbury ca. 1640 SOLOMON LEONARD (LENNER or LEONARDSON), b. prob. Monmouthshire, England ca. 1610; d. Bridgewater bef. 1 May 1671.

Discussion about her first name (either Sarah or Mary) is given in the profile of her husband, Solomon Leonard.

Sarah's father Roger Chandler immigrated in 1632. Not sure whether mother Isabella had died before that. Since Sarah would have been about 10, I assume she immigrated with her father in 1632.

Description From "Great Migration" his entry is under the name Moses Simonson. Moses Simmons, aka, Simonson, Symons, Symonson. was married to a Sarah BUT she was not the daughter of Roger and Isabell (Chilton) Chandler. Under Roger Chandler's Great Migration entry his daughter Sarah Chandler is listed as having married to Solomon Leonard(son). Sarah Chandler was not married to both men. The Mayflower Society in their book "Mayflower Families Through 5 Generations" Vol 2 recognizes Sarah's marriage to Solomon Leonard. That is the only marriage for her they list

_______________

  • Sarah Chandler Leonard
  • Birth: Oct. 15, 1622 Leiden Municipality, Zuid-Holland, Netherlands
  • Death: Oct. 27, 1675 West Bridgewater, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, USA
  • Sarah is the daughter of Roger Chandler and Isabella Chilton, who married July 21, 1615 in Leyden. Isabella is the daughter of Mayflower passenger James Chilton. 18 year old Sarah married 31 year old John Solomon Leonard in Duxbury, Plymouth, MA in 1640. Her first marriage, possibly his second. As far as I know, Sarah and John Solomon were parents to Samuel (1643-1720), John (1645-1699), Isaac (1650-1717), Mary (1650-1724), and Solomon (1650-1686). We believe Sarah Chandler Leonard died Oct 27, 1675 in West Bridgewater, Plymouth, Massachusetts. Sarah is my 7th great grandmother and her son Isaac (1650-1717) and wife Deliverance Ames (1653-1719) -6th GGP's, followed by their son Benjamin (1686-1749) and wife Hannah Phillips (1698-1730). Next are 4th GGP's Caleb Leonard (1726-1814) and bride Jemima Minthorne (1732-1768) and their daughter Jemima (1762-1814) married to Joseph Burt (1757-1814) and their son John Burt (1792-1870, who married Hannah Mitchell (1792-1875). Their son Sylvester (1833-1913) married Sarah Jane Pierce (1838-1916) and they were parents to Marie Burt (1871-1924), who married Wilson Parr (1864-1944), parents to my father John Parr (1898-1948). There are 22,000 family members in my public Ancestry.com account that will help fellow-researchers fill in additional data about this line and others. Please let me know when you find errors, helping others, as well. Wikipedia tells us there are 20+ million descendants from the original 102 passengers aboard the Mayflower, including many very famous "cousins". • He seems to have emigrated first to Leyden in Holland, probably with his father whose name it is believed was Samuel. There is some probability that they came to this country together -if so, the father must have died soon after. The exact period that Solomon emigrated to this country, and the place from which he embarked, it has been impossible to ascertain.
