Sarah was a Cherokee woman

Biography

Sarah Hicks was born in the Cherokee Nation (East) about 1800; she was the daughter of Charles Hicks and his wife Nancy Broom, both Cherokee. Charles Hicks was one of the first supporters of the Moravian missionaries and Sarah attended at their school at Spring Place from 1813 to 1816. The Moravians wrote in 1816, "Sarah is beginning to read nicely and between classes does many a service for us. " [1] She married Alexander McCoy, also Cherokee, in 1823,

"Mr. Alexander McCoy of Willstown & Miss Sarah Hicks, daughter of Mr. R. Hicks were this day married in the presence of the scholars, the mission family and some of the relatives—who came with them to witness the ceremony."[2] They were the parents of Elvina, Mary Ann, Richard, Araminta, Edward, Charles, Elizabeth, and Caroline (Nancy). [3] They lived at New Echota and like many Cherokee families they were forced from their home by white Georgians. When their property was assessed in 1836 it was described as a "Dwelling house, 2 pens, 20 feet square, hewed logs, 2 stories high, single roof, 2 brick chimneys, glass windows above and below," and valued at $1600 (most homes were valued at less than $200). [4] The 1835 Cherokee census lists a family of 11 living on Chicamauga Creek (now Tennessee). [5] Alexander died in 1837 and Sarah was Removed to Indian Territory with her children. She appears on the 1851 Cherokee census, living in the Illinois district, with children Araminta, Alex, Caroline, Edward, and Charles. Elvina and Richard, already married, are living nearby with their families. Daughter Elizabeth is living with her sister Elvina. [6] In 1860 Sarah applied for a widow's pension based on her husband's service in the War of 1812. Her death date is unknown, but she does not appear in any further records.
