About Sarah McKean
Sarah Armitage of Newcastle, Delaware was the daughter of Samuel Armitage 1717-1801 and Mary Harvey 1733-1817. She was the second wife of Thomas McKean, Delegate to the First Continental Congress. They were married on September 2, 1774, the day after the first congressional caucus. They resided at the northeast corner of 3rd and Pine Streets in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Together, they had four children. Their first child, a son, died in infancy. Sarah, the second child was born July 8, 1777, became the Marchioness de Casa Irujo. The daughter, Sarah's son, Carlos Martínez de Irujo, 2nd Marquis of Casa Irujo, would later become Prime Minister of Spain. The third child, Sophia Dorothea McKean was born 1783 and died on December 27, 1819 in Somerset, Pennsylvania with no children. The fourth child, Maria Louisa, born 1785 and died unmarried. Sarah died on March 6, 1820 and is interred in Philadelphia's Laurel Hill Cemetery.
