About Sarah "Sally" McKinney
Sarah Hopson was born in 1805 in Wilkes County, NC. She was one of the wives of Charles Ephraim McKinney (1780-1858).
Sarah was a Midwife, and apparently delivered the children of the other women in Charlie's life.
She reportly said that in fact Charles had seven families within a one-mile radius,(some within calling distance). When asked why she entered into such an arrangement, she said" I have all these children, about 12 by him and he is very devoted to them and he provides a good living for us". When asked if the women fought among themselves, she replied, "gosh no", we wouldn't dare for would have killed us" which meant nothing more than he wouldn't tolerate it.
She lived to the age of about 93. She lived with her son Merritt Burgin McKinney. Her date of death is not known.
Burial is in Greenlee Memorial Cemetery, Grassy Creek, Mitchell County, NC.
