Biography

Saarah Wilson was the wife of three Indian traders, John Amory, William Elders, and Thomas Nightingale and the mother of William Amory/Emory, also an Indian trader. Born in England, the Amory family emigrated from England to Georgia in 1737. [1]

There were apparently issues with the survey of their land in Georgia, and they soon abandoned it for a grant of 500 acres in South Carolina. [2] John and Sarah quickly became involved in trade with the Cherokee Indians. Sarah remained in Charleston, submitting regular bills for their expenses: "An Account of Mrs. Sarah Amory, amounting to the Sum of fifty-one Pounds and ten Shillings, being for dieting and Liquor for the Indians &c. " [3] "An Account of Sarah Amory, amounting to the Sum of £ 970:06:00, for Sundries supplied the Indians. " [4] John Amory died in 1746 and Sarah married two more times, to traders who had worked with her husband, She married William Elders in 1747 [5] and then Thomas Nightingale in 1749. [6]

Sarah died in March, 1765 and it is assumed she is buried at St. Philip's Church where the graves of two of her sons are located.
