Possible Mayflower Descendant

Mayflower Families, Vol. 15, James Chilton & Richard More identify 5 gen ancestry of James Chilton descendants, down to Moses Orcutt. If Mayflower has not altered requirements, descendants of the following children of Moses & Elizabeth (Slater) Orcutt could be eligible for Mayflower membership: Ebenezer, Huldah, Diantha (m. Thomas Crosby), Elisabeth, Margaret (m. John Tullar), Aaron Slater, Polly (m. Paul Tullar), Archibald (m. Rhoda Noble).

James Chilton , wife Susannah and dau. Mary arrived on Mayflower. James Chilton signed Mayflower Compact and died on board Mayflower in Cape Cod Harbor. Besides dau. Mary, Chilton had another dau. Isabella who did not arrive in America until circa 1629/1630. Regarding dau. Isabella, Bradford’s statement in “History of Plimouth Plantation”, that James Chilton “had another daughter that was married, came afterward” provides the only evidence that Isabella [Chilton] came to Plymouth.

MF Vol. 15 records the 5 Gen. ancestry as follows when addressing the Orcutt line:

JAMES CHILTON - b. bef. 1556, Canterbury, Eng.; d. 18 Dec 1620, Cape Cod Harbor aboard the Mayflower. m. bef. 1587, poss. Susanna Furner.

ISABELLA CHILTON – bp. 15 Jan 1586/7, St. Paul’s Parish, Canterbury, Kent Co., Eng. ; No death record found. m. 21 July 1615 at Leyden, Holland, Roger Chandler.

SARAH CHANDLER – b. 15 Oct. 1622 in Leyden, Holland; d. Bridgewater, MA bef. 27 Oct 1675. m. circa 1640, Solomon Leonard/Lennard.

JACOB LEONARD – b. circa 1647 in Duxbury; d. bet. 9 May & 19 Dec. 1717 at Bridgewater. m. circa 1689 Susanna King

Sarah Leonard – b. 11 Jun. 1699 in Bridgewater; d. 13 Aug. 1695 poss. Weymouth. m. 27 Feb 1720/21 William Orcutt Jr., poss. Son of Andrew Orcutt and Francis Ward. [William Orcutt, Jr. – b. 13 Aug. 1695 in Weymouth. Mayflower states “poss. Weymouth” while the Weymouth VR give b. 13 Aug. 1695, son of Andrew & Frances.] Marriage of William Orcutt & Sarah Leonard recorded in Bridgewater VR as 27 Feb 1720/21.

MOSES ORCUTT – b. 10 Dec. 1737. [this birthdate belongs to Moses Orcutt b. Stafford, Tolland Co., CT. who married 13 Sep 1764, Elisabeth Slater in Tyringham, Berkshire Co., MA].

Now, refer back to Sarah Leonard. Mayflower calls him William Orcutt Jr., subsequently stating possibly son of Andrew Orcutt. There appears to be enough William Jr’s. in the Orcutt line up without complicating it with calling a William Jr. a son of Andrew. For the record, Andrew Orcutt & Frances Ward did have a son called William, who happens to have the same birthdate as the one Mayflower calls William Jr.

William Orcutt IV (son of William Orcutt III and Jane Washburn) was born August 13, 1695 in probably in or near Bridgewater, Massachusetts, and died February 7, 1776 in Willington, Connecticut, USA.He married Sarah Leonard on February 27, 1720/21 in Bridgewater, Massachusetts, USA, daughter of Jacob Leonard and Susanna King.

Includes NotesNotes for William Orcutt IV: William Orcutt IV, born in or near Bridgewater, Massachusetts, perhaps on August 13, 1695, was theson of William Orcutt III and Jane Washburn( although the Mormon Family Group Record places his birth at Weymouth, Norfolk County, Massachusetts).He was married to Sarah Leonard on February 27, 1720/21 in Bridgewater.They had one son in Bridgewater, went to Stafford, Connecticut about 1724, and had 9 more children there.William was probably one of the proprietors of Stafford.He died on February 7, 1776, in Willington, Connecticut where his children James, Sarah, and Lemuel were living.
