According to Alexander Perry Scott (email dated July 9, 1999), Sarah Wallace Alexander, daughter of James Alexander and Sarah Wallace was born in Newry, Ireland and lived there with her Uncle William Wallace and family before coming to the U.S. Her parents are mentioned in a letter written by Sarah Wallace Perry, daughter of Sarah Wallace (Alexander) Perry, in abt. 1840, contained in an article published by the Clements Library at the U of Michigan in about 1988.
The marriage between James and Sarah (Wallace) Alexander was "not agreeable" to the Wallace family. After the death of her mother, her father returned to Scotland where he married again and had a large family. Sarah was adopted by her grandmother Wallace: and she died when Sarah was ten, leaving her with her Uncle William Wallace.
She was fifteen (15) when she came to America on the "Favorite" under the care of Mr. & Mrs. Galbraith; Mrs. Galbraith being a distant relation, to visit her Aunt Corbett (her mother's sister) who was dying.
" Christopher's wife Sarah came to America in Captain Christoper Perry's vessel, and the acquaintance thus formed ripened into love and marriage. Soon after the marriage they lived in the house of William Rodman, then but recently built, -- a large, commodious house, still standing in the village of Rocky Brook.
William Rodman was a bachelor, and lived with them. He was a well-read, well-informed man, and excellent company, exceedingly quick at repartee; but occasionally he was a little merry after dinner, from the effects of good wine. On these somewhat rare occasions, Mrs. Perry would place her hand on Mr. Rodman's arm and say, very gently, "William, I think thee had better go to thy room for a little rest." "William" always went away as meekly as a lamb, with a parting bow to the ladies, and a merry twinkle in his eyes.
Christopher Perry's first child, Oliver Hazard Perry, was born in this house. "
Her death was reported in the "RI Republican" for 16 Dec 1830.
