About Sarah Purton, Free Settler "Persian" 1832
After the Battle of Waterloo, Shadrack served in garrisons in France (the 52nd was the last English battalion to leave France in 1818), on the Isle of Man and in Ireland[16]. He probably did not marry until he was in Saint John, New Brunswick Province, Canada, near the border of the USA state of Maine where his first child, named George Smith Purton, was be born[17]. The affidavit from his widow, born Sarah Smith, said that they were married in “St John’s Church 1822”, but it was not until 1823 that the regiment went to New Brunswick and there was no church at the army base but there may have been a St John Church in the town (there is a historical church currently standing that was built after Shadrack left St John), but no doubt the regimental chaplain could have married the couple.
