About Sarah Randolph

On the 1850 census her place of birth is Maryland and on the 1860 census her place of birth is District of Columbia. Since her father's biography states that he returned to Maryland after his release from a British prison ship and resided in Maryland, it appears she may have been born in Maryland. However, in 1789 he was appointed collector of the port of Georgetown located in the District of Columbia and collected duties through 1793. He was one of 16 landowners whose property became part of the District of Columbia, which was established in 1890. On May 21, 1816 as Sarah Lingan, she married William Beverly Randolph in the District of Columbia.

Daily Critic Saturday, September 1, 1877 Social Gossip There has just passed from among us a venerable lady who was the last representative of one of the oldest and proudest names in Maryland – Mrs. Sarah Lingan Randolph, the daughter of General James Lingan, of the Continental Army and the widow of Colonel Beverly Randolph, of Virginia. Born in 1794, her life spanned a period teeming with historical interest and was full of romantic incident; her father’s friendship with Washington and the leading spirits of the day, brought her in close contact with men whose names are milestones in history and her position as daughter of so distinguished a patriot and near relationship to the Keys, Platers, Hansons, Beans and others of the old Colonial noblese, made her social position one of exceptional brilliancy. When about eighteen years old her father was murdered in Baltimore by a mob, famous – or rather infamous – in its day and generation and out of the consequences sprang the romance that ended in the wedding of the names of Lingan and Randolph. She was buried from her residence, on I Street, on Tuesday last and was followed to the grave by seventeen representatives of the new races of which she was the mother; there were sons, daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, the eldest a stately silver haired man, the youngest a manly lad, who cast flowers upon the house that is lowly built. Making them a sweet breathed echo of the knell that the liturgy sounds over poor humanity, Earth to earth, dust to dust, ashes to ashes. She was laid to rest at the side of her daughter, Mrs. Stark – the wife of Mollie Stark’s grandson – and there in the full sunshine of mid-summer she was left to sleep; her long life’s task was done, she took the talents given her back to their donor bright and unimpaired by nearly a century’s use and she left a name at which careless youth pauses, which maturity reverences and at the sound of which old age is satisfied to bear its burden.

Note from PLT: Sarah Lingan Randolph was strongly Unionist in feeling in letters to Frank (Francis) A. Dickins when he was working with a surveying party to build the Wheeling, Pittsburgh, & Baltimore R.R., a Branch of the B.& O. R.R. Frank spoke of Col. Samuel Johnston who was head of the survey party. (Another from my Johnston family I believe. PLT). He called her "Cousin Sally. He mentions his cousin, Sarah's son, James Lingan Randolph, who was chief engineer of the B & O RR. Much more in source for genealogists. There are 35 pages of information on Virginia families.
