About Sarah Rootes
Thomas Roots was baptized September 5, 1610 at Eastwell, Kent, son of Edmund Rootes and Emma Norrington. By 1651 he married Katherine (_) unknown surname. She was admitted into the Salem church on July 20, 1651; deposed on November 28, 1678 to being "aged about sixty-two years. Thomas married (2nd) Sarah (_) (Standish) Hutchinson after July 21, 1682 and before November 7, 1683. Sarah was the widow of James Standish and Richard Hutchinson.
Notes
On the decease of James Standish, Mr. Hutchinson was appointed administrator. Richard later married his widow, Sarah Standish. At his third marriage he must have been at least 79 years of age, and certainly 66 on his second. His will was signed Jan. 19, 1679, and proved Sept. 28, 1682. He died on 11 Feb. 1681/1682. His widow survived him, and shortly after married for her third husband, Thomas Roots, of Manchester, whose Will was proved Nov. 27, 1683. She was living as late as March 1683-4.
Richard Hutchinson's will (no date) mentions wife Sarah, son John,,son-in-law Anthony Ashby and my Daughter Abigail, his wife; my son-in-law Daniel Boardman, and my daughter Hannah, his wife; my grandchildren Bethia Hutchinson and Sarah Hadlock, each of them 10 acres of land; to Black Peter my servant, 5 acres. Sons-in-law Nathaniel Putnam, Thomas Hale & James Hadlock each received 40s. Son Joseph Hutchinson was sole executor and the document was witnessed by James Bayley and Joseph Mazary The document was proved 23 Nov. 1682. An inventory was taken 25 Sept. 1682 by John Putnam Sr. & Joshua Rea Sr. It amounted to L134-14s-3d. Administration of the estate granted to relict Sarah and Nathaniel Putnam 24 Aug. 1682.11
Richard Hutchinson died in 1681, at eighty years of age, leaving a large and well-improved estate. His will has this item: I give "five acres of land to Black Peter, my servant." He had given fine farms to his children severally, many years before his death. His second wife, who survived him, had no children. He had come by her into possession of a valuable addition to his estate. After distributing his property, and providing legacies for children and grandchildren, his will left it to the option of his widow to spend the residue of her days either in the family of his son Joseph, or elsewhere; if she should prefer to live elsewhere, then she should receive back, in her own right, all the property she had originally owned; if she continued to live to her death in Joseph's family, then her property was to go to him and his heirs. This, I think, shows that he was as sagacious as he was just. http://www.gutenberg.org/files/17845/17845-8.txt
