Sarah Jane Salmons (daughter of John C. Salmons and Rhoda Frazier) was born 04 Jul 1865 in Prestonsburg, Kentucky, and died 19 Aug 1934 in Cincinnati, Ohio. She married Thomas V. Salter on 12 Oct 1882 in Fallsburg, Kentucky, son of James B. Salter and Joanna Debord. The marriage took place in the home of her brother, Boon Salmons. Rev. H. Birch Hewlett performed the ceremony Miss Sarah Evans and Mr. Andrew Burke were the witnesses.

The birth date, July 4, 1865, was recorded in the Salter family Bible, probably by Sarah herself. The records of Vine Street Hill Cemetery, where she is buried, show her birth date as April 4, 1866. The church record shows her mother's maiden name as "Rosa Thornsburg" rather than "Rhoda Frazier," the name provided by Rose Salter Staab before her death.

In reality, her paternal grandmother was Anna Thornsbury. The name has been variously spelled as Thornsburgh, Thornsbury, Thornsberry, Thornbury, etc. All appear to be the same family.

Sarah first appears in a Cincinnati city directory in 1908. The family was listed in the 1900 census in Lawrence County, Kentucky. It is probable that the family came to Cincinnati between 1905 and 1907, because George did not attend school in Lawrence County.

She is listed as "widow of Thomas" in the 1912 Cincinnati city directory. Thomas did not die until 1938 (in fact, he outlived her), but it appears that they lived separately after coming to Cincinnati. Divorced or separated women were often listed as "widowed." She supported the family by working as a labeler.

In the 1920 Hamilton County, Ohio Census, Sarah (age 54) was listed on Boal Street as head of household with Lafayette (26), Rosa (24), and George (19) living with her. However, Thomas (age 64) is listed on 6th Street as head of household, with wife "Sarra" (55) living with him. The family does not know of any second marriage for Thomas. It is possible that he was living with a woman named Sarah, and it is also possible that, because they were not divorced, he continued to list Sarah as his wife.

Sarah died on August 19, 1934 in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio. She was buried on August 21, 1934, at Vine Street Hill Cemetery, Cincinnati, sec 22, grave 606.
