Biographical notes

John Leonard, immigrant ancestor,, was doubtless born in England, and settled as early as 1636 among the pioneers of the town of Springfield, Massachusetts. On the second division of Springfield lands his lot was that which in recent years has been occupied by Foot’s Block. It was eight rods wide, running from the Connecticut river eastward to Armory Hill. He held the office of town constable.

He married, November 12, 1640, Sarah Heath. He was killed by the Indians early in 1676 during King Philip’s war, and his widow married, February 21, 1677, Benjamin Parsons. In 1690 she married (third) Peter Tilton, and she died at Springfield, November 23, 1711.

Disputed Origins

Sarah Heald’s (or Heath or Healy) origins are unknown. Her maiden name could have been Healy. She was Sarah Heath according to the marriage record.

Sarah was not a child of John Heald and Dorothy Royle, and she was probably not born at Berwick-Upon-Tweed. She may have been born in one of the Berwicks in southern England. John Heald's family has been well documented.

There were no Heald families in early Springfield. Donald Lines Jacobus speculated that she may have been brought by a relative or been an indentured servant. He also notes that Gershom Hale or Heald, son of John Heald of Concord settled in Springfield a generation later, and its possible that she was a sister of John.

There was a Sarah HEALD, daughter of Thomas HEALD and Elizabeth ROBSON, was born in 1623 in Berwick upon Tweed, Northumberland, England. . Some debate as to whether her parents were John Heald and Dorothy Royle or Thomas Heald and ? No Heald family was early settled at Springfield, and she may have been brought there by a relative or an indentured servant.
