About Sarah Wall (Sansom)

Biographical Summary:

"...Sarah was born in 1814 in England, the ninth child of ten in the family. Her parents taught her to read form the Bible daily. She learned to do beautiful embroidery work, and she finished a sampler at the age of eleven. She was trained to be a good cook and worked in the homes of the gentry of England. It is said that she cooked for the Queen of England at one time.

Sarah was married to William Wall on September 26, 1836 in England. They became the parents of nine children. Two of their children died young.

Both Sarah and William were baptized in 1844 as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Their family suffered much ridicule and persecution. They could not afford to all come to America at the same time so they sent the two oldest- Joseph and Sarah Emily first. five years later they sent the next two, Fanny Maria and Dorcus Elizabeth. The rest of the family made the journey one year later as they sailed on the “Amazon” and arrived in the Salt Lake Valley on October 6, 1863, four months after leaving England.

The family first lived in Cache County, then moved to Manti, then to Wallsville, Sevier County, named after William Wall, and was later changed to Venice.

William, Sarah’s husband, passed away while living in Venice on February 16, 1889.

Sarah was a small woman, only four feet six inches tall, and she weighed ninety-five pounds. She was a nurse and mid-wife to many in the area. She made rugs and knitted stockings for her children and grandchildren, and her mince-meat pies were the best ever.

Sarah passed away in Glenwood, Utah on May 27, 1899, at the age of eighty-four years. She was a courageous pioneer woman of great faith to leave her homeland for the religious freedom offered in America. She is honored for her pioneering spirit by those who have followed her..."
