A BIOGRAPHY OF SARAH SALOME OVERMIER WHITMER, by Larry Overmire, Sept. 2008:

Sarah Salome Overmier (aka Overmire) was born in Centre County, Pennsylvania, on Feb. 19, 1807, the eldest child of George (IV) and Catharine (Emerick) Overmire. Baptismal records show Sarah was baptised as "Salome" and sponsored by "Eva Overmeyer" (probably her father's sister who married John Jacob Emerick). Sometime after 1809, the family moved to Perry County, Ohio, where nearly the entire Overmire clan had settled in Overmyertown, which later became New Reading.

On May 10, 1826, Sarah married John Whitmer, the son of Revolutionary War veteran Peter Whitmer and his wife Mary Magdalene Overmire, the daughter of the immigrant Capt. John George Overmire. Raised in the Lutheran church, John became Methodist Episcopal. Sarah would give birth to nine children in the ensuing years: Levi, Isabel, Mary Ann, Caroline, Franklin, Charles, Isaac, Catherine, and Eliza.

John and Sarah owned land in New Reading, but by the late 1930's they had moved to Jacksontown, Licking County. Then in Sept. 1847, they moved again to Crawford County, Illinois. They remained there until 1856 when they packed up again and moved west to Missouri, staying first in Knox County, then in Macon County. This move proved unsatisfactory as well, so they returned to Illinois, settling on a farm in South Fork Township, Christian County. About 1864-65, Sarah's brother George Overmier would also move to the county.

Sarah died on Jan. 9, 1874, at the age of 66, and was buried in Bethany Cemetery in Christian County.
