===============
In 1334, King George V endowed his maternal uncle, Sargis II of the Jakeli clan, with the title of atabeg, which his descendants wore until the 17th century. Accordingly, their principality Samtskhe became known as “atabegsky” ( Samtskhe-Saatabago ). Atabeg separatist aspirations played a significant role in the collapse of the centralized Georgian state in 1490.
