On or about Christmas Day of 1175, William de Braose invited Seisyllt ap Dyfnwal and his followers to a banquet, and had them all murdered; Seisyllt's wife and younger son Cadwaladr, who were at home, were also murdered. De Braose's actions were in retaliation, presumably, for Seisyllt's murder of his uncle. In retaliation for de Braose's actions, King John seized de Braose's lands and imprisoned his wife and son at Windsor, where he starved them to death. As reported by the Welsh chroniclers, "from that time forth, after that treachery, none of the Welsh dared place trust in the French." (See Thomas Jones's translation of Peniarth MS 70 (71)).
