SELMA KRISTIANA HALVORSON Selma K. Halvorson was born in Martel Township near River Falls, Wisconsin, on April 16, 1897 to Halvor S. and Petrina Halvorson. She passed away on January 10, 1996. She attended Herum Grade School and River Falls State Normal School. She was a teacher in a rural school near Maiden Rock, Wisconsin. She married Orin Halvorson August 22, 1922. Selma and Orin established residence in Minneapolis where Orin was a student and later a member of the faculty at the University of Minnesota. In 1928 they moved to the outskirts of St. Paul (now Roseville) where they lived until 1944. During this time Selma became president of the Mothers Club of Lauderdale School which she organized into a Parent Teachers Association. Later she became president of the Ramsey County PTA. She was also president of the Womens Society at University Lutheran Church of Hope. In the Fall of 1944 the family moved to East River Road in Minneapolis where they lived until 1949 when they moved to Urbana, Illinois. There they built a new home in 1952 in which she entertained many students and faculty as she had in her previous homes. She was secretary of the Literary Society and patron to the Mu Phi Epsilon music sorority. Selma was also very active in St. Mathews Lutheran Church in Urbana. Upon Orins retirement from the University of Illinois in 1965 they moved back to Southeast Minneapolis to 1901 E. River Road where she lived until April, 1992, at which time she moved to the Jones Harrison Residence on Cedar Lake. Selma was preceded in death by Orin who died October 20, 1975. She is survived by daughters, Betty Caspar and husband, Ted; Gayle Mosand and husband, John; sons Harlyn and wife, Jean, and Loren and wife, Ruth; by thirteen grandchildren, fifteen great grand children, and by two sisters: Ruth Walker of River Falls and Helen Haley of St. Paul. Selma was an untiring hostess to family, students and friends. She was a dedicated mother, grandmother and great grandmother for whom family gatherings and events were very important. In her Grandmothers Book she gave the following advice to her grandchildren: "You have all been given a variety of talents. Its your responsibility to develop and make use of them. To what extend you develop them is important. Remember it is not who you are but what you are that is important." She enjoyed gardening, needlework, reading and creating a beautiful and inviting home. She also enjoyed travelling and especially in later years made many trips to Europe. She had a collection of dolls and many beautiful items from other countries. You are invited to learn more of Selmas life in the pictures and items on display in the Fellowship Hall.
