During his last tenure with the City of Los Angeles, he spent most of his time in the Department of Airports, where he created new accounting methods to track Los Angeles International Airport's various revenues and shifted the department from taxpayer financing to revenue financing (1947-1965). He became a nationally recognized city finance expert.
He was in a work-related helicopter crash in 1952. Some of his vertebrae were fused, and his digestive system was drastically rearranged; these injuries may have contributed to the development of the cancer that killed him.
He was an active volunteer at St. Cyril's Parish in Encino, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, United States while he lived there. He taught the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults, served as president of the Men's Club, and prepared tax returns for its convent's nuns.
He retired in 1974.
He was diagnosed with cancer in 1995. He began treatments in July 1995.
