I attended day school conducted by the Rev Beck.
In 1831 he began his college career and attended the South African College for three years. I became my father’s usher in his school in 1834
I married Maria Catharina van Helsdingen on March 27th , 1848 conducted by the Rev. P.E. Faure at Wynberg.
Ten years as assistant of my father, I was invited to set up a private school at Stellenbosch. After a few months, I’ve received an offer to teach at the government school at Wynberg, Cape Town. I. Began my teaching career at £100/0 per annum.
Three years later I traded my job as teacher for private tutor to the children of Mr. Blommenstein in exchange for training to become a farmer.
After a finding myself unfit for farming, I returned to government school establishment and was appointed to begin the school at Colesberg on January 1st ,1845 at a salary of £130/1 per annum. I arrived on March 27th and opened the school on April 1st, 1845
Our Lord Jesus began to draw me. Closer. I. Bought books of the Rev. Thos Scott from Rev. Appleyeard of the Wesleys Missions. Through these works God began His work and training in me. I. Was converted and changed my life totally.
During September 1847 the Rev. Atkinson of the London Missions Colesberg, was obliged to go to the East for the benefit of his wife’s health. The Rev. Smailer of the Wesleyan Ministries Colesberg undertook to substitute for the Rev. Atkinson until his return. It meant that he had to conduct services in Dutch. On February 4th 1848 hê realized his knowledge of Dutch was not good enough. So, he asked me to take over this duty.
I’ve preached for the first time on February 5th 1848 and I was requested to continue until the return of the Rev. Atkinson. The Rev. Dr. Philip, Superintendent of the Londen Missionaries, offered me. Ordination as Pastor. After much prayer, the Holy Spirit convinced me to accept. I was offered the position as fulltime Pastor with a package of £160/1 per annum and £5/1 for each child. Then I resigned from my position as government teacher from October 1848. Rev. Atkinson never returned and I took his place.
My ordination was conducted by the Rev. James Read of the River Independent Ministries and the Rev. Pindon Smailer of Wesleyan Ministries Colesberg under order of Rev. Dr. Philip in the presence of Fleetwood Rawstone, Commissioner of Colesberg. Rev. Casales of the French Mission and Mr. Wright of Philippolis acted as witnesses.
On May 2nd 1861, Bishop Cotterill of Grahamstown, instituted me as Rector of the Perish and Church of Colesberg. I continued to complete the building project of the Christ Church that Rev. Atkinson had begun. In the meantime we continued services at the mission chapel.
On September 21st 1856, I took charge of the official inauguration of Christ Church of Colesberg. For 21 years I preached four times on a Sunday, twice in English and twice in Dutch.
After my wife passed away, I re-married the widow of Mr. Edward Gibbon of Colesberg, a merchant of fortune. She was without any family and well of. Her maiden name was Schainch (Elsie Helena Schainch) and the Rev. Luckhoff of the Dutch Reformed Church married us on February 17th 1863. She died July 3rd 1875.
It was a very difficult time for me and I went to Cape Town for two months leave by the end of December 1875. There I unexpectedly found how Rominized the Church of England had become and misinterpreted under the name of “The Anglican Church of South Africa” with a new constitution.
I was offered the position of Bishop, but refused it and resigned as Rectory of Colesberg on April 1st 1876.
