Enlisted in 2nd Batt. Royal Berkshire Regiment. Reg No. 3879. Served in South Africa 1898 to 1902, and in Jhansi, Uttar Predesh India, 1907 to 1914. Queens Cape Colony Orange Free State South Africa Medal, with Clasps. 1898-1901-1902. Plus Transvaal Kings South Africa Medal, with Clasps. Resigned at his own request after serving for 18 years. Re-enlisted as a Private, then reinstated as Sergeant. 1st Garrison Battalion, Norfolk Regiment. Reg. No. 658084 and 21372. WW1 Medal Awards. British War Medal, Victory Medal, 2 Blue Chevrons.

Promoted to Corporal 6 Dec 1907, then to Lance Sergeant 3 Sep 1910, and finally to Sergeant 14 Feb 1914.
