About Sgt Franz Daniel Hax

Co. I, 3 Regt. Cav., NJ Vols. Civil War

He was born in 1808 in Obergischer Kreis, Nordrhein-Westfalen and arrived in New York from Rotterdam in 1842. In 1848 he married Franciska Nehr, who was 14 years his junior, in Chicago. During his time in Chicago, he was employed as a butcher. They had the following children: John; Theodore; Lena; Robert (born 1850) and Robertine.

  He fought in both the Mexican War and the U.S. Civil War. He suffered a wound in the Civil War that led to his capture and subsequent internment at the infamous Libby Prison in Richmond, VA. He owned several properties at Egg Harbor City, NJ, in 1862 (earlier tax records were unfortunately destroyed in storage) and the family increased by Hertha (born 1862), Herman (born 1863), Laura (1866), and Linda (born 1869), all born in EHC. All properties are listed as sold in the 1872 Tax Book. He would eventually move to Meriden, CT Inscription: Co I 3rd Regt Cavalry NJ Vols, Civil War, age 80 yrs
