About Sgt. John Black

John Black served in the Union Army during the American Civil War in Company A, 31st Illinois Infantry Regiment. He entered service on 15 Aug 1861 and mustered in on 18 Sep 1861 in Cairo, IL. He reenlisted as a Veteran on 5 Jan 1864 in Big Black, MS. He was taken prisoner by the Confederates near Atlanta, GA on July 22, 1864 at the Battle of Atlanta. He was brought to the Andersonville Prisoner of War Camp where he died of wounds on July 30, 1864. He was buried in Andersonville National Cemetery in grave #: 4315.
