About Sgt. John Hemingway
John and Abraham Hemingway, owners of the New Haven Iron works, are recorded in Branford village records as requesting permission on August 23, 1706 to erect a fulling mill and raise the dam on the Branford side, which they are given permission. They were given Mill rights. The forge and mill, and surrounding lands, stayed in the Heminway family for 150 years, until the death of John Heminway IV.
