Biography

Excerpt From 1st Page: Thomas Holcombe's Earlier Posterity TAG Vol. 57 [1981] by George McCracken Pages [65-76] [160-169] [225-229] [April 1981]

10. Sgt JONATHAN3 HOLCOMBE (Nathaniel2), 2nd son, was born 15 Feb. 1678/9 and died at Simsbury, 7 Oct. 1761 aet. 84, of the falling of a small tree.

Family

The deceased had married first, ca. 1700, Mary Buell, born 23 Dec. 1677, died at Simsbury, 21 June 1720, daughter of Peter2 Buell (William1) by his first wife Martha Cogan and she was the mother of all the children;

married second, on 22 June 1721, Mary Saxton, widow of William Gillett, who had died at Simsbury, 27 Jan. 1718/19.

On 7 April 1719 administration was granted on Gillett's estate to the widow Mary (Manwaring 2:389). On 3 Nov. 1730, Mary Holcomb, administratrix, and Jonathan Holcomb were cited to appear, the case of Mary and Jonathan Holcomb vs Daniel Gains being heard on 1 Dec. 1730. This Daniel Gains had married Eunice, daughter of William3 Gillett (Jonathan2, Jonathan1) by Mary Saxton, and his interest was on behalf of his wife.

Children:

  • i. Jonathan4, b. Simsbury 23 Nov. 1701 [so the baptismal record], or 25 Nov. 1701 [VR], bapt. by Dudley Woodbridge, 30 Nov. 1701, d. 29 or 30 1737; m. 4 Dec. 1729, Amy Case, b. 1703, d. 1792, daughter of Richard2 Case (John1) by his wife Amy Reade, and she m. (2) ca. 1738, Joshua3 Boardman (Daniel2, Samuel1) of Sheffield, MA, to whom she also bore children. Jonathan1s probate is in Manwaring 3:286; inventory of £346/08/09, taken by James Hillier, James Smith, John Wilcockson 2nd. Administration was granted to Amey Holcomb the widow, 1 Nov. 1737, with Azariah Holcomb of Simsbury bound in £500.
  • ii. Son, d. Simsbury, 22 Oct. 1705, of course, not in father’s will.
  • iii. Elizabeth, b. Simsbury, 14 Jan. 1703/4, d. there 23 Aug. 1727; m. there, 28 Feb. 1723/4, Joseph Willcockson.
  • iv. Azariah, deacon, b. 22 Feb. 1707/8, bapt. by Dudley Woodbridge13 June 1708, d. 1771 aet. 66; m. Simsbury, 25 June 1730, Hannah Loomis, b. 21 May 1705, daughter of Philip3 Loomis (Samuel2, Joseph1) by his wife Hannah ___ (see Loomis Genealogy #224).
  • v. Damaris, bapt. Simsbury, 12 July 1713, m. William Gamaliel Ward, b. 2 Oct. 1694, d. Simsbury 6 June 1774, aet. 80, son of William3 Ward (Obadiah2, William1), on whom see Andrew Henshaw Ward, Ward Family (Boston 1851) p. 37. It is probable that Damaris was not baptized immediately after birth as her first child was b. 1727. Mr. Gamaliel Ward informed the Simsbury clerk that the first eight of his children were b. at Hartford [L. B. Barbour found no births recorded there], but he did not say this until after the birth of the 10th, when his memory may have been hazy. The Ward Genealogy, cited above, says that the first five were b. at Union, the 6th at Somers.
  • vi. Jacob, 3rd son, b. Simsbury, 14 April 1715, d. 29 July 1737, according to Simsbury Records, or 13 July 1737 according to Manwaring 3:286; m. there, 10 Feb. 1736/7, Margaret3 Case (Richard2, John1), and she m. (2) her husband’s 1st cousin, Peter** Holcombe (Nathaniel3, Nathaniel2, Thomas1), the father of all her children. Jacob’s inventory of £78/07/05 was taken 14 Oct. 1737 by James Hillier, James Smith and John Wilcoxson 2nd; distribution gave £33/15/03 to widow Margaret; to Azariah Holcomb, £11/1/3; to Damarus Ward alias Holcomb and to Mary Holcomb [not yet married] £11/05/03 each. This shows there was no posthumous child.
  • vii. Mary, 3rd daughter, b. Simsbury, 10 July 1717, d. 27 Jan. 1802 m. 15 Aug. 1739, Amos3 Case (Bartholomew2, John1); named as Mary Case, with Damaris Ward and Azariah Holcombe in Peter Buell’s will as grandchildren; wife of Amos Case in her father’s will.

Will

  • His will was dated 29 May 1759, probated 2-3 Nov. 1761, witnessed by three, John Owen, Esther Owen and Rosecitte Owen. The handwriting of the two women is so similar that one suspects one signed for both.
  • The will leaves a third to beloved WIFE MARY.
  • Having already given by deeds of conveyance to beloved GRAND CHILDREN Jonathan Holcomb and Michael Holcomb and Arne Holcomb, the children and heirs of beloved and ELDEST SON JONATHAN HOLCOMB NOW DECEASED, "the full of the portion I Designe for them,"
  • he now bequeaths to beloved SON AZARIAH HOLCOMB and his heirs and assigns forever, "he paying all my Just Debts, and Legacies hereafter mentioned, my Dwelling house and Barn and home Lot and Orcharding, together with all my Lands thereto adjoining, Lying on Salmon Brook, on both sides the Brook, and also my Lot in the Estwoods in Salmon Brook Society near Thomas Bacons Land in partnership with Edward Matson, and also I give unto my Said Son Azariah all my Moveable Estate, to be for him and his heirs forever."
  • To beloved DAUGHTER MARY, wife of Amos Case, £10 to be paid within one year after decease, "together with what I have al-ready given her."
  • To beloved DAUGHTER DAMARIS Ward wife of Gamaliel Ward, Twenty Shillings, "together with what I have already given her," to be paid her within one year.
  • To be-loved grandson Abner Holcomb all "my Common or undevided Lands Lying in Simsbury." Son Azariah Holcomb sole executor.
  • The will is signed by an elderly but not senile signature.

The probation is interesting. The two female witnesse swore on 2 Nov. 1761 before John Owen, Justice of the Peace, and on 3 Nov. 1761, John Owen Esq., the other witness, swore before J. Talcott, Just. Peace. The inventory, not dated, was taken by Nathaniel Holcomb, Peter Rice and Hos: Willcocks and came to £289/15/2, with additional £3/14/6. The items include the usual clothing, tools, farming implements, etc., and 13 barrels of cider, and though I miss any firearms, there are several powder horns, powder, and brass bullet moulds. The executor presented but did not sign an account of his expenses coming to £28/7/9.
