About Sgt. Maj. Henry James Feltus
Henry James Feltus (August 13, 1846 - January, 1926) was a Civil War veteran and early newspaper editor in Bloomington.
He enlisted on Jan. 4, 1864 into Company C of the 13th Indiana Volunteer Cavalry, where he was eventually promoted to Sergeant-Major. He was mustered out on Oct. 15, 1865, with the rank of Adjutant of Regiment.
In 1872, he established The Weekly Star in Greencastle. Thence moving to Bloomington, he became editor of the Bloomington Courier, a position he held until 1895. At that time he established the Weekly Star and organized the Feltus Printing Company.
He served as postmaster and on the Bloomington City Council.
In 1880, Mr. Feltus was elected Councilman of the Third Ward, and was the first Democrat ever elected to the Council in Bloomington. He is, and has been for three terms, a member of the Monroe County Democratic Central Committee. In 1879, he was commissioned, by the Governor, as Captain of the Monroe Guards," Indiana State Militia.
Feltus married the former Catherine Ella Baird on Feb. 14 1873, they had five children: Gertrude, Henry, Roswell ("Roy"), John, and Paul.
