Samuel Steele served in the Union Army during the American Civil War in the 31st Illinois Infantry Regiment. He enlisted on Sep 18, 1861 in Company F with the rank of Musician. He later re-enlisted as the Principle Musician of the Regiment. He re-enlisted as a Veteran on 5 Jan 1864 in Big Black, MS and was reduced to the ranks and assigned to Company E. He was promoted to Sergeant Major and transferred to the Non-Commissioned Staff Company on 1 May 1864. He was promoted to the rank of 1st Lieutenant in Company H, but mustered out with the rank of Sergeant Major on19 Jul 1865 in Louisville, KY.
