Biographical Sketch

Robert Lockwood was baptized on 18 January 1600/1, at Combs, Suffolk, England, the son of Edmund Lockwood and Alice Cowper. Robert arrived in Massachusetts in 1633. He was designated a freeman of Massachusetts Bay at Watertown 9 March 1636/7, so he was certainly also a member of the Watertown Congregational church (membership was required for freeman status).

He removed to Fairfield, Connecticut, about 1646, was made a freemen of Connecticut in May 1652, and died in 1658 (estate inventoried 11 September 1658). He married Susannah, probably daughter of Richard Norman of Salem, Massachusetts, she married (second) Jeffrey Ferris.

Associations

Edmund Lockwood, brother. Robert was executor of Edmund's estate in 1635, and gave permission for the church of Watertown to appoint Governor John Haynes and Simon Bradstreet to give the minor children unto the care of such persons as they thought meet. Edmund's widow married 2nd to John Masters. Edmund had resided at Cambridge before his death.

Prior to 1639, Robert Lockwood sold to John Masters "five acres of marsh at the oyster bank near the river." This land had probably belonged to Edmund prior to his death. Also, we know that in late 1636 to early 1647, the size of property granted was based on number of family members, and Robert had two extra persons in his family. These were the two orphaned children of Edmund's first marriage, (her name is unknown). One was Edmund's son, Edmund Lockwood, and the other is unidentified.

Nicholas Knapp's "Homestall" was an adjoining property to Robert's. Nicholas sold all his holdings at Watertown on 6 May 1646, while Robert had done so a week earlier, on 30 April 1646, and to the same men, Bryan Pendleton and Edward Garfield. They both removed to Stamford in 1646. Immigrated to Watertown

Robert arrived at Massachusetts Bay Colony sometime before 1634. In fact, judging by the pattern of his landholding at Watertown, he probably arrived by 1633. His son, Jonathan, was born in Watertown 10 September 1634. His wife, Susanna was in Watertown for several years by that time, and his brother, Edmund, arrived in 1630. Therefore it is entirely possible that Robert immigrated earlier. He may have even traveled with his brother. The year is set at 1634 only because we have solid documentation for it.

Family

Robert married, by 1634, to Susanna Norman, the daughter of Richard Norman. Robert and Susanna had eleven children.

After Robert's death, Susanna married Jeffrey Ferris, and she died at Greenwich on 23 December 1660. Jeffrey Ferris was made guardian of the minor children after the death of Robert.

Property at Watertown, Stamford and Fairfield

Robert was granted or purchased land many times while in Watertown. In the Composite Inventory, he held eight parcels. Examples include:

  • July 25, 1636, Robert was granted a thirty-five acre lot out of the "second division" at Watertown.
  • February 28, 1636 he was granted six acres.
  • In the allotting of land on June 26, 1637, Robert Lockhart received six acres in Watertown.

In 1643, the town decreed that "all that had not Farmes laid out formerly shall take them by ten in a Division ... allowing 13 Acres of upland to every head of Persons and cattle," and Robert was assigned 130 acres.

In 1645, Robert sold a small parcel, and on April 30, 1646, he sold all his holdings at Watertown to Bryan Pendleton and Edward Garfield. Robert removed in 1646 to Stamford and to Fairfield in 1650.

On 21 May 1657 Robert was appointed Sergeant of the Fairfield train band.

Estate

Robert died without having left a will. The court appointed his widow, "Susanna Lockwood" administratrix of the estate. Nine children received bequests: Jonathan, the eldest; Joseph; Daniell; Epraim; Gershom; John; Abigall, who married John Barlowe; Sarah; and Mary, who later married Jonathan Hewsteed. Daughter Deborah, who had already received her portion.

The inventory of Robert Lockwood's estate was taken on 1 September 1658 He is described as "Robert Lockwood deceased in Fairfield." His estate was worth £464, with £110 in real estate. He may have died suddenly; besides not leaving a will, some property transfers were left unfinished and were addressed by the court.

"An Atrocious Lockwood Blunder"

An 1889 genealogical work about this family, "Descendants of Robert Lockwood: Colonial and Revolutionary history of the Lockwood family in America, from A.D. 1630", by Holden and Lockwood, contains major mistakes and has lead to problems in understanding the lineage of the Lockwoods in America.

Apparently the surviving children of Edmund Lockwood, brother of the subject of this profile, were assigned to Robert instead of Edmund. Donald Lines Jacobus wrote an article published in the The American Genealogist in 1954, entitled "An Atrocious Lockwood Blunder."

Unfortunately the errors have been repeated and propagated in many other works, and now are infecting many of the databases available online. Jacobus cautions us with a "warning against accepting the statements of this book as authentic without thorough investigation and verification." This is an appropriate warning in regards to any secondary source in genealogy, but it is especially essential in regards to the Lockwoods.

  • **************

Robert Lockwood's parents were EDMUND LOCKWOOD, b. 02 Sep, 1574, Combs, Suffolk, England, d. 03 Mar, 1634/35, Cambridge, Massachusetts, and ALICE COWPER, b. 1573/74 in England, d. 14 Jan, 1600, Combs. Suffolk, England. They were married 03 Mar, 1591/92, in Combs, Suffolk, England.

Edmund came to New England with the JOHN WINTHROP fleet, "THE GREAT MIGRATION", arriving 18 Oct, 1630, with two sons and a daughter, Edmund, b. 09 Feb, 1594, Robert, b. 14 Jan, 1600, and Eleanor, b. 1609, all born in Combs, Suffolk, England.

The Winthrop migration began in 1628 when a group of separatist Puritans obtained a patent (license) from the Earl of Warwick, a proprietor of the New England Company, to form the Massachusetts Bay Company and establish a plantation in New England. The next year, with other members of the company, leader John Winthrop, a lawyer, signed The Cambridge Agreement, in which members vowed to emigrate if the Massachusetts Bay proprietors themselves could relocate there and take the patent with them. On 14 Mar 1629, four days after King Charles I dissolved Parliament in the dispute that would eventually lead to civil war, the King agreed to let Winthrop and the Massachusetts Bay Company relocate to New England.

In Massachusetts, Edmund Lockwood was made a freeman 18 May 1631, and lived in Newtowne (today's Cambridge) in 1632. Edmund reportedly moved south to Connecticut in 1636.

The following was provided to me by Mr. Hilt on 10/3/12:

"Hope you get this four years late Gwen. Robert is my 8th GGF through Gershom. By now, you may know this but Ann Millington, Gershom's wife, is our family's direct link to the Royal House of Plantagenet (William The Conqueror - 27th GGF) and the Saxon Kings of Wessex (Alfred The Great). She was the grand daughter of Sir Gilbert Millington, a Lord in the House of Commons who signed the death warrant for King Charles I of England. Hope you get this! - Chris Lockwood Hilt"
