Samuel A. Sackett served in the Union Army during the American Civil War in Company L, 3rd Illinois Cavalry Regiment. He entered service on 12 Aug 1861 at Walshville, IL and mustered in on 16 Aug 1861 at Camp Butler. He died on 27 Aug 1864 at Gayoso General Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. He was most likely injured while takeing "part in the repulse of General N.B. Forrest in his daring raid on Memphis, on the night of the 21st of August."
