About Sgt. (USA), Anderson Atkinson Marchant
Shan fought in the Civil War. He was first a Pvt. in the Arkansas Volunteers, 1st Batt, AR Inf., Co. D, for a period of 6 mos, 1862. That unit was organized in Helena, AR, July 20, 1862. In Oct. the unit was assigned to Benton Barracks, St. Louis, MO, and mustered out Dec., 31. He again served, in the 48th Regt., Mo Inf., Co. E., for the Union Army, as a Pvt., in defense of Rolla, MO, against Price's command, until 1864, then on to Columbia, Tn, and thereafter, Chicago, IL. The unit then served as guard duty at Camp Douglas until June 1865, Then ordered to Benton Barracks in Mo, and mustered out June 22, 1865, at the rank of Sgt. After the war he moved his family to Dodd City TX. May he rest in peace near Amanda.

His name is listed as Anderson A. Marchant in several sources, i.e., census, and Civil War records, and he went by the nickname "Shan". He married Amanda F. Dixon, daughter of John B. "Brushy" Dixon and Miranda Flemming, and the sister to John F. "Tonkey" Dixon, and others. Shan was the son of Wiley B. Marchant, born 1808, Williamson County, TN, and Nancy Marchant. Shan was the brother of James, John H., Thomas, Green, Willie, and Mary F. Baby brother John was born in January and died in August. Their mother died in April, two and a half months after John was born, leaving Thomas, Shan, and Green motherless. By 1848 Wiley was remarried to Eaney Dale Marchant. Shan and Amanda were the parents of; Wells, born 1869, John Wiley, born 1872, Rufie, born 1879, Minnie, Feb. 2, 1880, and Thomas. G., Oct. 11, 1868. Some of their family is buried in Talley Cem., Moccassin Creek, and the Mo. Pacific Railroad Cem, Norfork Dam-South.
