Rites Thursday for Mail Carrier

Shelt C. Vickers, 65, Secord Route mail carrier, was stricken with a heart attack while delivering mail Saturday and died a few hours later. Shortly after he had started on his route, he stopped at the store operated by Leo Martonosi Jr. at M-61 and M-30 and asked Martonosi to take him to a hospital. Mr. Vickers died several hours later.

Born at Woodville, W. Va., on June 14, 1897, he was married to the former Clella Gandee on Jan. 22, 1920 at Clendenim, W. Va. They moved to Gladwin County in 1937. Mr. Vickers worked as an oil well driller for seven years before he began carrying mail.

He was a member of the Gladwin F. & A. M. and the Gladwin I.O.O.F. of which he was a past worshipful master and a past noble grand.

Survivors, include his widow, Clella; two sons, Shelt Jr. of Grand Rapids and Charles of Gladwin; two daughters, Mrs. Eleen Moore of Colorado City, Texas, and Mrs. Bettie Edick of Gladwin; four brothers, Elbert, Hal, Homer and Glen, of Alkol, W. Va.; six sisters, Mrs. Emmer Vickers, Mrs. Suda Hill, Mrs. Arzieila Hill, Mrs. Lenotra Haggerman, Mrs. Alma Huffman, and Mrs. Mamie Wade, of Alkol, W. Va.; and eight grandchildren. A son and daughter, sister and two brothers preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Miner Chapel. The Rev. Ralph Milks will officiate and burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Gladwin County Record dated 1-24/1962 Column - 4 Page - 1.
