About Sheridan S. Stoddard
Black River Democrat Nov 6, 1941 Sheridan S. Stoddard,71, a former sheriff of Lewis county and for a number of years superintendent of highways in the town of Lowville, died at his farm home on the Lowville-Hamblins Corners road Sunday afternoon at 5:40. Mr. Stoddard had been in ill health for some time. About two weeks ago he was taken ill with pneumonia and on Saturday developed an embolism which caused his death. Mr. Stoddard was born in the town of Harrisburg, Dec. 25, 1869, son of Anson G . an d Elizabeth Livingston Stoddard. Mr. Stoddard was educated in local schools. On Dec 14, 1892, he married Miss Vina E. Jones of Lowville. Following their marriage, the couple moved to Watertown where he was employed. He returned to Lowville in 1897 and was employed in the Asbestos Burial Casket company until he went into the general trucking business. From 1901 to 1912 he served as chief of police in the village of Lowville, and from 1912 to 1915 was sheriff of the county. He served as town superintendent of highways in Lowville from 1927 until 1939. Surviving are his wife and a daughter. Miss Genevieve A. Stoddard, a member of the Lowville Academy faculty. A son, Merle S. Stoddard, died in 1914. One brother, H. Ferdinand Stoddard, and one sister, Miss Corabel Stoddard, both of Schenectady, survive. Funeral services were held from the home Wednesday at 2, Rev. A. B. Corbin, pastor of the Methodist church, officiating.
