Sherman Ackley
Birth: Feb. 28, 1860 Greene County Pennsylvania, USA Death: Nov. 10, 1945 Oklahoma, USA
PARENTS: Samuel and Sarah (Rush) Ackley who emigrated with their young family from Pennsylvania to West Virginia, then to Ohio, and onto Montgomery & Anderson Counties in Kansas (where they lived several years). And finally to Chouteau, Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory, on March 10, 1878. From Chouteau the family moved to Dewey, Cherokee Nation, I.T., then to Wagoner in Creek Nation, I.T., and later to Keystone, Oklahoma Territory--all in what later became Oklahoma.
WIFE: Sherman married Martha Jane Garoutte on Jan. 1, 1893 in Tulsa (see marriage license attached). He participated in a land run in 1893 and "staked out" several acres in what is today the Jordan Valley township, Pawnee County, Oklahoma.
In February of 1937 he was interviewed by Effie S. Jackson, one of many field workers commissioned by the W.P.A. (Works Progress Administration) and sent across Oklahoma to gather oral histories from pioneer citizens. While at his home "three miles north of Keystone on Highway 64," Sherman gave his brief biography as part of the "Indian Pioneer Project." No, he was not Native American, but as pioneer to Indian Territory, as eastern Oklahoma was then called. It has been transcribed and is found online:

Along with the children linked below, Sherman and Martha also had two daughters: Ida Mae Ackley McCollom and Ethel Nora (who married Carl McLeister).

Tekst til Marriage Certifikate (billede til denne profil):
I especially liked reading that the witness to their marriage was Tulsa's first storekeeper, Tom Archer, who later died a painful death as a result of a drunk friend emptying his gun inside Archer's store, causing a keg of dynamite to explode. I work near Archer Street downtown, named after poor Tom.
