About Shirley Jean Bauman

Shirley passed away on March 22, 2016 after a five year courageous battle with Dementia at Stone Valley Alzheimer Care Facility in Reno, Nevada at the age of 77. She was born on October 1, 1938 to Gus and Wilma Wade in Bloodland, Missouri. Shirley was the oldest of four (Peggy, Jack, and Donald). Shirley traveled a great deal with her family during her first 18 years. Her father was a Master Welder who worked on constructing large dam projects throughout Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. This meant Shirley had to pull up stakes with her family 11 times in short period of 14 years. Shirley graduated from High School in 1957. She moved to San Diego, California where she worked in a jewelry store on Broadway Avenue. Shirley met her husband Don Bauman while working at the jewelry store.

Shirley married Don in Arizona on August 18, 1960. They lived in California until they moved to Elko, Nevada in 1964 where Carlin Gold was beginning to build a new gold mine. Shirley had three children Kelly (Fred) Bitz, Shawn Bauman, and Charley (Marlene) Bauman. She had five grandchildren Ashlee, Ryan, Kaylene, Rhiley, and Bradley and one great grandchild Abby.

In December 1971 the family moved to Battle Mountain, Nevada. Shirley said this would be last place she would live because she done with moving. Shirley was a stay at home Mom. While her children were growing up, she was very active in her children's extra-curricular actives such as PTA, Brownies, school band, Little League Softball and Baseball, Track, and Wrestling. When Shirley's children were grown, she continued to volunteer at the Battle Mountain School District as an aide to help students with their art or reading.

Shirley enjoyed to sew, crochet, draw, study astrology, reading, garden, spending time with grandchildren, going to the movies and visiting with people at the Owl Club and Nevada in Battle Mountain. She always said Nevada was the best place she had ever lived and reinforced this claim with her family to stay in Nevada. Shirley passed on to her children her strength and her attitude one should stand up for their family and what they believe in. At times it may not be the popular view, but one must let their voice be heard.

Shirley was preceded in death by Don, Gus, and Wilma. The family would like to thank those who helped Shirley fight her battle with Dementia for the last five year Dr. Gingold, Isabella Wood, RN Joy of Gentiva Hospice, and management and staff of Stone Valley. There will be no services. The family request in lieu of flowers please volunteer your time at your local school.
