About Shirley Temple

Shirley Jane Temple Black (born Shirley Jane Temple; April 23, 1928 – February 10, 2014) was an American film and television actress, singer, dancer, and one-time U.S. ambassador to Ghana and Czechoslovakia. She also served as Chief of Protocol of the United States, 1976–1977. Temple began her film career in 1932 at the age of three and, in 1934, found international fame in Bright Eyes, a feature film designed specifically for her talents. She received a special Juvenile Academy Award in February 1935 for her outstanding contribution as a juvenile performer to motion pictures during 1934, and film hits such as Curly Top and Heidi followed year after year during the mid-to-late 1930s.

Shirley Temple was born in Santa Monica, California to Gertrude Amelia Temple (née Krieger), a homemaker, and George Francis Temple, a bank employee. She had two brothers, George Francis, Jr. and John Stanley. She was of English, German, and Dutch ancestry.

On September 19, 1945, when Temple was 17 years old, she married John Agar (1921–2002), an Army Air Corps sergeant and physical training instructor, in an Episcopal ceremony at Wilshire Methodist Church. On January 30, 1948, Temple gave birth to their daughter, Linda Susan Agar. Temple divorced Agar on December 5, 1949 and received custody of their daughter. The divorce was finalized on December 5, 1950.

Temple married Charles Alden Black (1919–2005), a WWII United States Navy intelligence officer and Assistant to the President of the Hawaiian Pineapple Company, on December 16, 1950 in Del Monte, California. Temple gave birth to two children, Charles Alden Black, Jr. (born April 28, 1952) and Lori Alden Black (born April 9, 1954).
