At the age of ten years he came West with his Parents, First to Cook County, Illinois, Then to Clinton County, Iowa.
A number of relatives and friends of the late Sidney J Councilman gathered at the Main Street Methodist Church, Sunday Afternoon, to pay their final tribute of respect. The service was in the charge of Rev. Thomas Carson, Pastor of the church, who gave a consoling message. Misses Alice and Olive Salk sang "Saving Grace" and "In Summer Land," being accompanied by Mrs U B Davis.
The pallbearers were all grandsons of the deceased, Messrs. Roy and Bert Councilman, Harry and Alice Wright, Eugene Smith and Lawrence Brenner.
His Life's Sketch
Sidney J, son of Frederick and Aucilia Ann Councilman was born July 18, 1838, at Binghamton, New York and died at his home, 322 West 9th St, Boone, Iowa, December 12, 1924.
When ten years of age he came with his parents to Cook Co, Ill; later coming to Dewitt, Clinton County, Iowa. He attended high school at Maquoketa, followed farming as a vocation for a member of years, tending to the district school in winter, and October 22, 1862, he was married to Angeline Winchell at Cascade, Iowa. To their union were born six children; Mrs Lillia Smith, Ames Iowa; Mrs Elizabeth Kennedy, Riverside, California; Mrs Hannah Anderson, Seattle, Washington; Mrs Florence Wright, Carlisle, Iowa; Willard J Councilman; Ogden, Iowa; Mrs Ethel Brenner, Des Moines, Iowa.
He was an enthusiastic horticulturist and was an active member of the society and contributed helpful papers. He united with the M E church when 20 years old and has been a faithful member since and a Sunday School worker. He retired from the farm in 1902, making his home in Boone, where his widow still resides.
