Western Champion (Parkes, NSW : 1898 - 1934) Thursday 19 June 1930, page 6, Article. - Cite: http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article113551276 Obituary. Mr. S. L. West. Passed away at his residence, Rosehill, Sydney, on Tuesday, an old pioneer of the Bogan Gate and Trundle districts in the person of Mr. Simeon Levi West. The late Mr. West, who was a native of Yorkshire, was 83 years of age, and came to Australia as a young man. He settled in the Corowa district, where he engaged in saw-milling and later in farming. About 43 years ago, Mr. West came to this district, purchasing the old hotel near Bogan Gate, which he kept for some time, afterwards removing it to Bogan Gate and finally disposing of it to Mr. Con. Clifford. In the meantime he had purchased Botfields and Wilga Park, and held portion of the former property right up to his death, the place for several years past being under the management of one of his grandsons, Mr. A. R. Buchanan. Some 17 years ago the deceased gentleman took up his residence in Mosman. Afterwards he moved to Greenwich, where his wife died about six years ago. Of later years he had lived at Rosehill, where he died, after a long period of indifferent health. The late Mr. West is survived by one son and nine daughters, the son being Mr. E. P. West, of Trundle, and the daughters Mrs. T. Cole (Parkes), Mrs. H. Hollibone (Burwood), Mrs. P. Ryan (Rosehill), Mrs. H. Hernfield (Granville), Mrs. R. H. Buchanan (Parkes), Mrs. C. Lowe (Sydney), Mrs. J. Medlyn (Parkes), Mrs. B. Tweedie (Granville), Nurse M. West (Rosehill) and Miss Sylvia West (Rosehill). There are also 38 grand-children and 19 great-grandchildren surviving. There is also one sister (Mrs. Fitzpatrick) resident in New Zealand, surviving. The late Mr. West was a great lover of horseflesh, and keenly interested in racing. He owned a number of fine thoroughbred stallions and bred a number of racers which carried his colors on many courses in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland. One of his early possessions was Granville, which won the V.R.C. Grand National Hurdle twice. An other was Tradition, who in 17 starts, scored 16 wins and one second. Among his victories were the Albury and Williamstown Cups. Other horses which sported Mr. West's colors were Taranaki (winner of Williamstown and Wagga Cups), Rosebery, winner of Parkes Cup, and at Charters Towers; Mutineer, which won in Parkes and elsewhere, and Definition, half-brother to Taranaki. Definition was crippled as a foal, and never raced, but sired many winners. Right to the end of his life, racing was a ruling passion with Mr. West, and a mare of his (Discreet) has registered four wins since May 1st, and was nominated for the Forbes meeting this week. The late Mr. West at one time owned considerable property in Parkes, but had disposed of it, the last lot to go being West's Hall, which had been erected in 1907, at a time when there was considerable local controversy about the site on which the People's Institute, including a hall, should be erected. Mr. West's spirited action filled a long felt public requirement.
