About Simon Biddulph, SV/PROG

Simon emigrated to South Africa in 1820 with his wife and children Louisa (24), John (22), James (20), William (14) and Frances (12). They were all in Bailie's party on the vessel Chapman.

Simon Biddulph (17 May 1761 – 5 Jan 1842) married Ann Burnett (1765 – 10 Feb 1844) at St John's Church Halesowen Worcester, England on 11 Jul 1785. They lived in Tamworth, Staffordshire. Simon was apparently not very good at managing his finances and relied to a degree on handouts from the Biddulph family and his wife’s mother. In 1819 the British government began a scheme to encourage emigration to the Cape Colony, promising 100 acres of land and free passage. About 1000 families agreed to go. This was an attractive option for Simon and Ann. They migrated to South Africa aboard the Chapman, leaving England on 3 December 1819 and arriving at Algoa Bay on 10 April 1820. They owned a farm at Birbury and had a residence at Graaff. Simon died at Bathurst, Cape Province, South Africa in 1842 at age 80. Ann died in the same place 2 years later, age 78. They had 14 children
