About Simon Digby, DD, Lord Bishop of Elphin

Entered Trinity College Dublin as Scholar Commoner 14 May 1661 aged 16; son of Essex, Dean of Cashel; born Kilminchy, Queen's Co.; B.A. 1664; LL.D. 1680; Bishop of Elphin - Alumni Dublinsenses.

"A native of Kilminchy Castle, Portlaoise, Co. Laois, he was educated at Trinity College, Dublin and Oxford University. He was ordained a priest in 1667 and was named the rector of Dunshaughlin, Co. Meath. He was later appointed the prebendary of Geashill and rector of Ballycommon, both in Co. Offaly. He was also the incumbent of St. Michan's parish, Dublin and the dean of Kildare Diocese. In 1678, he was appointed the Bishop of Limerick, Ardfert and Aghadoe. He was transferred to the See of Elphin in 1691 where he continued to minister until his death in 1726 at Lackan. He was buried in Tisrara Church at Four Roads, Roscommon. He was a supporter of King James II and visited him in exile in France" - Michael T. Lennon, 'A dictionary of Roscmoomn biography' (2020).
