Sineus, ruler of Beloozero

Sineus and Truvor , according to the Nestor Chronicle, were two brothers to Rurik. Rurik took power over the Kiev kingdom in 862 and had a crucial role in the formation of the Russians.

Sineus and Truvor are the legendary brothers of the Varyag Rurik , called to reign in Novgorod . According to the traditional chronicle version (" The Tale of Bygone Years ") in 862 , Rurik became a prince in Novgorod, Sineus - in Beloozer , Truvor - in the land of Krivichi , in Izborsk ; two years later, Sineus and Truvor died, and Rurik assumed sole authority.

The popular 20th century scholarly interpretation has been that "Rurik, Sineus, en Truvor" should be read "Rurik, sine hus, en tro(gna) vär(ingar)" (Rurik, his house/relatives, and true companions), however, linguistical studies show that "sine hus" and "thru varing" contradict basic morphology and syntax of old Scandinavian dialects and could never be translated as "our faithful" and "his households". On the other hand, historians of 19th century found common old Scandinavian names Signjótr and Þórvar[%C3%B0]r, which could fit well with "Sineus" and "Truvor" by Nestor's transcription.

SINEUS . According to the Primary Chronicle 860/62, following a call to "the Varangian Russes [=Scandinavians]…to come to rule and reign over us", Rurik and his two brothers migrated to settle, Sineus the second brother settling in Beloozero but dying after two years [Russian Primary Chronicle (1973), 860-862, pp. 59-60.].
