Sipho (25), a member of the Rural Community Policing Forum, residing on farm Besters, Kwa Mashu, KZN, was murdered in a massacre along with 6 other people, on 21st January 2002.
A 20-man task team was appointed to investigate by provincial police Commissioner Moses Khanyile, who visited the scene of the killing. Around 18h00, twelve armed men attacked a number of homes killing victims actively involved in fighting crime in the area.
Besides Sipho, the other victims identified were; Monwabisi Nxazane (30), Penuel Shange (41), Mlindeni Msomi, Jabulani Nzuza (19) and Johannes Kubheka (all 27), Sankeliswe Ndlovu (21), Johannes Kubheka's girlfriend, was critically wounded and later died in a local hospital.
In January 2002, seven perpetrators arrested appeared in court are facing 14 charges - seven of murder, four of attempted murder, two counts of malicious damage to property and one of arson.
Two of the suspects were also charged with illegal possession of firearms after police recovered a shotgun and a pistol. It is believed that the eighth accused will become a State witness.
The accused are Mfanafuthi Carpenter Msimango (21), Zamokwakhe Zondi (21), Nini Samson Zondi (18), Sibusiso Trevor Thabiso Zondi (20), Mxolisi Langa (21), Wiseman Nhlakanipho Manzini (19) and Bhekisisa Linda Buthelezi (20).
