Biographical Summary
"Archibald Stewart, of Burray, in Orkney, 4th but last surv. s. of William Stewart, of Mains, in Galloway, by Barbara, da. and h. of James Stewart, of Burray aforesaid, which William was only br. to Alexander, 1st Earl of Galloway [S.], was in Hamilton's army, 1648, for the rescue of the King, being afterwards in that of Montrose ; held a command at the battle of Worcester, and was taken prisoner ; was in 1683 Lieut.-Col. of the Orkney militia, and, having suc. his elder br., William Stewart, in the estates of Mains and Burray, was cr. a Baronet [S.], as above, with rem. to heirs male whatsoever, the Privy Seal being dated 4 Nov. 1687, at Whitehall. He m. firstly, Isabel, da. of Sir William Murray, of Abercairny. She d. 3 Aug. 1683. He m. secondly, a few weeks later, 16 Sep. 1683, his maidservant, Katharine, da. of Patrick Rowsay, indweller in Stronsay. She d. in childbed s.p.m., 26 June 1684. He d. at Burray 13, and was bur. there 17 May 1689.""
