About Sir Arthur Robert Guinness, KCB

Sir Arthur Robert Guinness (11 January 1846 – 10 June 1913) was a New Zealand politician, and Speaker of the House of Representatives.

He was born in , son of Frank V. Guinness, who arrived at Lyttelton by the ship "Tory" in 1852. He was educated at Christ's College, Christchurch, New Zealand 1854-1859 (being no. 31 on List).

A barrister and solicitor in Greymouth, he served on the Westland Provincial Council from 1872-1876, and was then Chairman of the Grey County Council from 1876-1890.

He was the Liberal Party Member of Parliament for Grey from New Zealand general election, 1884 to 1890 then Greymouth from 1890 to 1913. He was Chairman of Committees from 1893 to 1902, then the seventh Speaker of the House of Representatives from 1903 to 1913.

When he died, his replacement for Grey was Paddy Webb, who was elected on the second ballot with Liberal support.

(BY TELEGRAPH — PRESS ASSOCIATION.) GREYMOUTH, This Day. The funeral of the late Sir Arthur Guinness will take place on Friday afternoon. To-day expressions The mourning is universal ; flags are half-mast, and shop windows are shuttered. Lady Guinness has received messages of condolence from all parts of the Dominion, including the Premier, members of the Government, and politicians, of all shades and opinions in politics, bearing splendid testimony to the appreciation of his services. Flags were flown at half-mast on the various public buildings in Wellington to-day out of respect to the late Sir Arthur Guinness. The Hon. A. L. Herdman will leave Wellington for Greymoutb to-morrow night to represent the Government at Sir Arthur Guinness's funeral. The Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) to-day telegraphed on behalf of the City Council and citizens condolences to the widow ( Lady Elizabeth Guinness )of Sir Arthur Guinness.
