  • .... His father left him a reversion in the lands settled on his mother for her life and provided for his maintenance and education until 21. From his mother he inherited her ancestral home in Devon and other property. This patrimony, although not considerable, was sufficient for a place in county administration and he became sheriff twice, on the first occasion replacing Christopher Copleston in mid term after Copleston’s dismissal by Elizabeth. Little trace has been found of Malet’s activities outside Devon apart from occasional references to him at the Temple and his Membership of Parliament. His two appearances in the Commons were presumably the work of the Russell earls of Bedford, whom he honoured by naming his second son Francis. He had no personal ties with either Plymouth or Bodmin, and at Plymouth he took precedence over a rising townsman Richard Hooper. The Journal does not mention Malet. In his undated will he remembered local charities, provided for his surviving children and named his son Malachias executor and (Sir) Robert Denys and Thomas Mallett† supervisors. John Malet died on 26 Oct. 1570 during his second term as sheriff.4

  • The Malet Baronetcy, of Wilbury in the County of Wiltshire, is a title in the Baronetage of Great Britain. It was created on 24 February 1791 for Charles Malet, for diplomatic services in India.[2] The second Baronet was Minister to the German Confederation from 1852 to 1866. The fourth Baronet was Ambassador to Germany between 1884 and 1895. The eighth Baronet was a Colonel in the 8th King's Royal Irish Hussars and High Sheriff of Somerset from 1966 to 1967.
  • The Malet (pronounced "Mallet") family is of great antiquity. William Malet accompanied William the Conqueror to England. His son Robert Malet was the first Lord Great Chamberlain of England. William Malet was one of the guarantors of the Magna Carta. Sir Baldwin Malet was Solicitor-General to Henry VIII. Sir Thomas Malet was to be created a baronet for his services during the Civil War but died before the patent had passed the Great Seal.
